Hello, I’m Matt — the person behind Matt the Sash.

I wanted to use this first blog post to introduce myself, explain what I do, and share a bit about my background for anyone visiting the site for the first time.
I’m a sash window restoration and replacement specialist and a fully trained carpenter and joiner with over 20 years of experience in the trade. I started my career straight from school by completing a carpentry apprenticeship, which gave me a solid grounding in traditional joinery and workmanship. Since then, I’ve worked extensively fitting, repairing, restoring, and replacing timber sash windows, casement windows, and doors.
I grew up in London, surrounded by period properties where sash windows are a key feature of the architecture. Over the years, I’ve worked on countless traditional windows and have come to understand them as a complete working system — how they’re built, how they should move, and how to repair them properly so they continue to work for decades.
One of the most common questions I’m asked is whether sash windows need replacing. In many cases, they don’t. A large part of my work involves restoring and repairing original windows, replacing worn components such as cords and weights, repairing decayed timber, easing stiff sashes, improving draught performance, and upgrading glazing where appropriate. Full replacement is always a last resort and only recommended when restoration is no longer viable.
I now live in Surrey with my family and work locally across London, Surrey, and the wider South East. I focus on providing an honest, reliable service with a strong emphasis on quality workmanship and attention to detail. Whether it’s a single window repair or a larger project, I approach every job with the same level of care.
Services I Provide
• Sash window restoration
• Sash window repair
• Sash window replacement (where restoration is no longer viable)

This blog will be used to share examples of my work, explain common sash window issues, and offer practical advice for homeowners looking to maintain or improve their windows. If you’re interested in sash windows or thinking about having work done, I hope you’ll find the posts useful.
Thanks for reading,
Matt
